Foil Bearing
A bearing supported by the working fluid that is pulled into the bearing via the high pressure generated from 
the high-speed spinning shaft.This type of bearing requires no external pressureization system to operate, it works just off of the shaft spinning. Once an air gap is achieved no wear occurs. Able to operate at speeds above 60,000rpm, possibly in the hundreds of thousands, and temperature ranges between -250 and 1650 deg F.

Journal Bearings

We should look into the closed brayton cycle (CBC, aka brayton-stirling hybrid). It looks like this is one of the new ideas out there that is getting some attention.  I've found lots of literature on it and it might be something we can consider.  The basic idea is to use a small turbine (aka turbocharger) feed the expanding gases into the turbine, expel the hot gas into a regenerator/radiator to cool, feed the cooled gas into the compressor, and the compressor compresses the gas into the heating chamber to repeat the cycle.  The turbine and compressor are connected to the same rotating shaft.  The shaft of a turbocharger spins up to 150,000 rpm. I believe the compressor is providing around 20-25psi of pressure for air but I haven't done enough looking around to be sure. Electric power would be extracted by an axial flux alternator (AFA) attached to the high speed rotating shaft.  The AFA is going to be the most efficient alternator for high speeds. With good design and alternator research we can achieve above 95% at high speeds.  Ill do some more looking around to see if I can find realistic efficiency values. From what I've read so far the CBC seems to be able to be a good competitor to the ASC.  However I haven't found any examples of a CBC on the scale we want. We would be walking into new waters with a sub kilowatt cbc power source. The smallest example I have found so far is based on a C30 microturbine and produces up to 25kW.  That particular example, using the c30 microturbine is still way too big for our application.  But what's interesting is in the example I found of the CBC using the C30 microturbine they had to modify it to operate in a closed cycle.  After looking at the modified C30 microturbine, it looks really similar to a turbocharger that you would find on a car.  With some design and modifications I think we could really transform a turbocharger into something similar to the C30 microturbine CBC especially since we only need half a kilowatt at best.  The concern I would have with this design is the life of the radial bearings in the turbocharger.  Some of the turbochargers I looked at are rated for five years if run continuously.  A solution to this might be to use high speed magnetic bearings since that is the part of the turbocharger that typically fails. If we used magnetic bearings they would have to be somewhat isolated from too much heat. I think the Curie point is around 350 F for these type of bearings before they demagnetize. Piezoresistive Strain Gage 
Uses the piezoresistive effect of bonded or formed strain gages to detect strain due to applied pressure. Common technology types are Silicon (Monocrystalline), Polysilicon Thin Film, Bonded Metal Foil, Thick Film, and Sputtered Thin Film. Generally, the strain gauges are connected to form a Wheatstone bridge circuit to maximize the output of the sensor. This is the most commonly employed sensing technology for general purpose pressure measurement. Generally, these technologies are suited to measure absolute, gauge, vacuum, and differential pressures. 

Capacitive 
Uses a diaphragm and pressure cavity to create a variable capacitor to detect strain due to applied pressure. Common technologies use metal, ceramic, and silicon diaphragms. Generally, these technologies are most applied to low pressures (Absolute, Differential and Gauge) 

Electromagnetic 
Measures the displacement of a diaphragm by means of changes in inductance (reluctance), LVDT, Hall Effect, or by eddy current principal. 

Piezoelectric 
Uses the piezoelectric effect in certain materials such as quartz to measure the strain upon the sensing mechanism due to pressure. This technology is commonly employed for the measurement of highly dynamic pressures. 

Optical 
Uses the physical change of an optical fiber to detect strain due to applied pressure. A common example of this type utilizes Fiber Bragg Gratings. This technology is employed in challenging applications where the measurement may be highly remote, under high temperature, or may benefit from technologies inherently immune to electromagnetic interference. 

Potentiometric 
Uses the motion of a wiper along a resistive mechanism to detect the strain caused by applied pressure. 
 
Thermal 
Uses the changes in thermal conductivity of a gas due to density changes to measure pressure. A common example of this type is the Pirani gauge. 

Ionization 
Measures the flow of charged gas particles (ions) which varies due to density changes to measure pressure. Common examples are the Hot and Cold Cathode gages.

Active Rectification 
uses power MOSFET's seem to be the most efficient way to rectify AC to DC. The design is much more 
complex then the Silicon or Schottky rectifiers but can achieve efficiency near unity. There are limits; as the voltage 
increases, the efficiency of active rectification decreases. If the voltage was too high it would have lower efficiency than regular rectifiers. It would depend on the quality of the MOSFETs.
